Live EstimateHow the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is Calculated in 2026
The Australian Government's Child Care Subsidy reduces early learning costs directly at your provider. Your entitlement is determined by three core tests:
1. Combined Income Test
Your family's total adjusted taxable income determines your base subsidy percentage (from 0% up to 90%). Families earning under $85,279 receive the top 90% rate.
2. Subsidised Hours Allocation
Families receive standard baseline care of 72 hours per fortnight (36 hrs/wk). Working or studying 48+ hours per fortnight unlocks the maximum 100 hours of subsidised care.
3. Hourly Rate Cap
The government caps the hourly rate it will subsidise (currently $14.63/hour for centre-based day care). Any provider fee above this cap is paid as part of your gap fee.

Child Care Subsidy (CCS) Explained
Everything you need to know about eligibility, activity tests, hourly caps, and out-of-pocket savings.
Services Australia automatically withholds 5% of your Child Care Subsidy entitlement throughout the financial year as a safety net buffer. When you complete your annual tax return, Services Australia reconciles your actual income with your estimate. If you were paid the correct amount (or underpaid), you will receive this 5% withholding back as a lump sum refund.
If you have more than one child aged 5 or under attending an approved childcare service, the second and subsequent younger children can receive an additional subsidy increase of up to 30 percentage points (capped at a maximum of 95%). This higher rate applies to families earning up to $362,408 per year.
Recognized activities include: paid employment (including paid and unpaid leave), self-employment, recognized study or training courses, looking for work, unpaid work in a family business, and recognized voluntary work. In couple families, both parents must meet the activity test; the hours of subsidized care will be based on the parent with the lowest activity hours.
You claim CCS online via your myGov account linked to Centrelink. You'll need your Customer Reference Number (CRN) and your child's CRN. Once approved, you provide your CRNs and dates of birth to your childcare provider, who will submit your enrolment to Centrelink. The subsidy will then be paid directly to the centre, reducing your invoice.
No! The Australian Government removed the annual CCS cap entirely. Eligible families can claim their full entitlement throughout the entire year with zero annual dollar limit.
